Innovation Prize in Continuing Education 2011
Statute and Conditions of Participation

“Unlimited Learning – Didactical Approaches to Dislimitation and Boundaries!“ – following this motto, the German Institute for Adult Education – Leibniz Institute for Lifelong Learning (DIE) awards a prize to innovative professional practice.

The social phenomenon of dislimitation, shifting and overcoming of boundaries establishes opportunities for finding new approaches – in learning unlimited by space or time, in common learning of different cultures and generations, in learning in a virtual environment, maybe even in different nations. Dislimitation though also entails the risk of transcending boundaries by entangling working and living environments. Thus, acceleration as well as deceleration is of great significance.

In the age of globalisation, the challenge providers of continuing education face is the development of modern programmes for learners and testing new approaches. Which didactic response do providers of continuing education have for an unlimited learning environment? How can this phenomenon be met didactically on a professional level? Whicht are the opportunities provided by unlimited learning scenarios? Are boundaries removed through learning or do they need to be redrawn? Which role do learners play? How are they supported, included and brought together?

With the Innovation Prize in Continuing Education 2011, the DIE wants to include both aspects of dislimitation: opportunities as well as consequent risks. In relation to both aspects, we are interested in didactical innovations of the following categories:

  • “Space and Time“: development of newly structured spacial and/or temporary programmes, e.g. through inclusion of new environments, application of new media and use of virtual environments for learning;
  • “Working and Living“: didactical solutions for unlimited learning in a working and living environment – the opportunities and risks of dislimitation in this area have been made a subject of learning;
  • “Nation and Generation“: mutual learning takes place across borders and generations – development of new learning conditions in the light of heterogeneity e.g. in international groups of learners.

Conditions of Participation

  • Applications can be made by initiators, developers and supporters of projects, programmes and models from any educational institution as well as other organisations, enterprises or initiatives.
  • Projects must have been tested in practice.
  • Projects must be innovative.
  • Obvious reference to “Didactical Approaches to Dislimitation and Boundaries“.
  • Starting point must be adult education.

Application

Please briefly present your project, programme or model on two standard pages, taking the guideline provided in the questionnaire into account. Shortlisted applicants will be asked for detailed information.

Formalities

By signing the consent form, the applicant declares his/her consent to the copying and publication of the presentation submitted as well as to the publication of project manager and project title if awarded. Thereby, copyrights remain unaffected. The applicant also consents to providing material about the awarded project for public relation as well as for publication.

The Innovation Prize will be awarded during the DIE Forum on Continuing Education on December 5 and 6, 2011. Applicants should prepare to present the awarded project in workshops during the Forum.

Applications may be submitted until March 31, 2011 (date of postmark). DIE employees may not enter an application. No legal recourse is permitted.

Application procedure

All applications entered will be viewed and preselected by the DIE award committee. Shortlisted applicants may be asked to provide additional information. Materials of selected projects will be presented to an independent, specialized and honorary jury. Up to three projects will be awarded of the same priority.

Prize

In addition to the award, the laureates receive a cash prize and can expect publicity due to public relations of the DIE. The award ceremony will take place on December 5 and 6, 2011. The laureates have the opportunity to present their projects to an expert audience from the fields of research, politics and practice of continuing education including subsequent publications and press releases
