ERDI members act as the central research service institutes for the area of continuing education (research, practice and policy-making) in their respective countries. The consortium acts in this manner to package the expertise available in Europe in the area of applied and practical research in the field of continuing education. |

ERDI offers its members a forum for
- Continuous exchange of experience and information,
- Ascertainment of current needs in the field of research and development,
- Planning and execution of joint transnational studies and projects.
ERDI regularly organises international expert workshops on current topics and issues summary surveys on national continuing education systems.
The DIE has been an active member of ERDI since 1993 and has been a member of the Board since 1997.

The DIE has been a member of the European Association for Education of Adults, the umbrella organisation for non-governmental organisations from the area of continuing education, since 1999. With four offices in Brussels, Helsinki, Budapest and Girona, the EAEA plays an important role in the further development of adult education policy and the promotion of good practice at the European level. European Society for Research on the Education of Adults (ESREA)
Staff of the institute have been actively involved in this amalgamation of researchers and research institutions working in the field of adult education for years. The DIE has been an institutional member of the society since 1999. ESREA offers a comprehensive information network for people active in the field of research. Homepage:

Cooperative ventures
The DIE concluded a cooperation agreement with the
Universitatea de Vest Din Timisoara (Rumania) in July 1999: The DIE is involved in the teaching of adult education and teaching sciences and is consulting with the Rumanian university over the creation of studies curricula for an educational science studies programme. In addition, the DIE works together with the Rumanian university on research projects involving topics relating to adult education at the local and international level, distance education and the educational sciences as a whole. The DIE together with the university founded the
Rumanian Institute for Adult Education (IREA) in March 2000. The DIE is a member of the administrative board of the Institute.
The DIE and the University of Ostrava have had a comparable cooperation agreement providing for cooperation in the areas of teaching, studying and research in the area of educational sciences since January 2002.
The DIE together with Zhejiang University in Hangzhou founded the Institute for Adult Education at Zhejiang University (IEZU)
in May 2000 with the aim of promoting research and mutual exchange between China
and Germany in the field of adult education. The Director of the DIE,
Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Ekkehard Nuissl
von Rein, is the German Co-director of the IEZU. The DIE shall be support the IEZU inter alia in developing a masters in adult education study programme to train students to manage continuing education institutions.
