ART, NEW MEDIA AND INTERNET
General Information:
"From graphic-design to creative
networking in arts
Development and testing of a concept for adult and further
education"
This is the title of a new experimental model
project at the DIE funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education,
Science, Research and Technology (BMBF) http://www.bmbf.de.
The project was initiated on the 1st October, 1997 and will end on 30
September 2000.
The project focuses on the following question: Does
adult education provide an adequate communication environment which
encourages the participants to use the new media techniques creatively and
which offer them the possibility of a self-expression on an autonomous and
artistic basis?
Regarding this question a working theme called
"ways and traces - a virtual travelog" has been conceived for
the realization of the project. By offering courses under various themes
such as "paths of life, topographies, travel accounts, encounters,
environments" participants shall be given individual insights in
internal and external aspects of life.
These "personal impressions" shall be
processed artistically by means of computer graphics and in a second step
further communicated within the internet. The realization of the theme by
virtual groups shall take place at four institutions. Finally the
development of a virtual topography, accessible for everybody in the
internet under the URL "Cyberscape" shall be realized.
In realising this project the DIE cooperates with
other institutions of design, education and science. The project will be
monitored and evaluated during all the phases by an artistic and
scientific advisory board and will be subject to final editorial treatment.
Actual information:
The Institut für Neue Medien (INM) Frankfurt/M. http://www.inm.de
has been actually charged to develop in cooperation with the DIE an
internet-web. By means of this web the exchange of the working results and
of information between the participants and the virtual groups shall be
provided. Furthermore the participants may get artistic inspiration by
their researching activities within the information fields of "media
arts" (net art, timebased art etc.) and the dialog about the project.
In addition to that an homepage is actually under
construction. The web will then be devided into three different domains
such as the "Cyberscape"
(working area of the participants), "Art'n'Bytes" (media-art
information space with hyperlinks and VRML gallery "Plug In Plaza")
and "Dialog" (including a guestbook, scientific/-artistic
background information, annoucements concerning the project etc.). It´s
full function is expected by September 1998.
Four institutions of adult education intend to offer
above-mentioned courses. The VHS Hamburg Stadtbezirk West, the VHS
Leverkusen in cooperation with VHS / KOMED Mediapark, Köln http://www.komed.de

Since May 27th, 1998 a dummy of the project's
homepage is accessible under the URL:
http://www.cyberscape.de
The site is actually under construction and most of the functions are
still inactive. It is suposed to change more frequently. However some
hyperlinks are already activated. You may surf through the sites of the
working field (in its raw state). Just have a look and visit our progress.

Agenda of March 23th, 1998
Top 1: Welcoming speech by the vice director of the
DIE, Mr. Klaus Meisel and the project director Dr. Udo Thiedeke
Top 1: Introduction of the participants
Top 3: Brief representation of the project's
intentions and concept
Top 4: Formulation of relevant themes and questions
for further work of the advisory board
Top 5: Discussion
Summary:
The project's concept was presented on the expert
forum. Thus the project aims at developing an educational concept to
promote the creative media competence which shall be researched under
different aspects such as communication, cooperation and acquisition/managent
of knowledge.
Furthermore questions regarding the importance of
knowlege, education and interactivity were raised within the meeting. In
this context they referred to the conveyance of the recipiant's and
producer's role in the internet, the conveyance of incentives of
self-directed working in virtual groups or the importance of the internet
as a public space.
Finally a discussion on the problems and
possibilities of the theoretical integration and its pratical realization
was held on with regard to the construction of the internet-web and under
consideration of VRML-object worlds (VRML = Virtual Reality Modelling
Language, three-dimensional modelling of „communication worlds" in
the internet).
