Portrait of the library

With more than82,000 volumes, the library of the DIE is the largest specialised research library for adult education in German-speaking territory.

It has been collecting literature in the field of educational science since 1958, with priority being placed on adult education/continuing education and the most important related sciences (psychology, sociology, philosophy and business administration).

There is also a considerable body of historical literature available, e.g. adult education journals going back to 1900.

In addition to German-speaking literature, the library also contains a growing body of foreign-language literature, particularly from the Anglo-Saxon area.

The DIE took over the private adult education library of Jindra Kulich in 2001, consisting of 2,500 volumes and 80 journals.

Born in Czechoslovakia, Jindra Kulich is an adult educator. After fleeing Czechoslovakia in 1951, he began working at a Danish adult education centre, emigrating later to Canada. He worked there at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver in the faculty for adult education. Jindra Kulich was a prolific author of books and articles on adult education in Central and Eastern Europe and Scandinavia.

This area of concentration is reflected by his library, containing works up until 2001.

The DIE Library subscribes to around 230 journals, of which a large number are analysed on an ongoing basis. Essays, monographs and articles from anthologies are indexed by key words and documented in the database.
