1. End of the EU Project “visuaLearning“
Dear readers,
We would like to inform you that the EUProject „visuaLearning“ is completed.
Thank you very much for your interest and your suggestions.
Special thanks goes to our learners and trainers who supported us with their
active participation in the realisation of the group discussions and
qualification workshops. Numerous information and suggestions have flown into
the project.
As already mentioned in the last newsletters we have conducted group
discussions with learners. You will find the results of this qualitative
analysis in the document “Explorative
Research: Relevance of visual learning for specific target groups”.
Based on the findings of this survey a “Qualification
Concept. Guide for Trainers” and a “Reader Visual Learning” have been
developed which were the basis for qualification workshops for trainers among
other things. In these workshops the methods of visual learning have been
presented to the trainers and could be exemplarily applied in order to develop
transfer possibilities for the courses. Suggestions and details of the trainers
pertaining to these methods can be found in the ”Qualification Concept. Guide
for Trainers”, in the “Overview on Methods“ and in the form of different
mindmaps in the Gallery on our Website.
We would be pleased if the material developed in the project would be a
support to you in applying increased visual learning in courses.
With kind regards
Monika Tröster
Project Co-ordinator of the EU-Project „visuaLearning“

Visual Learning:
Qualification Concept. Guide for Trainers
The guide
presents a qualification concept which will enable trainers to work more with
pictograms, pictures and adequate creative methods in order to improve the whole
training-learning process. The aim is to raise awareness about visual learning
and visual literacy und to look in detail at methods that allow students to
address learning needs through visual strategies.
Overview on
Methods
The overview
comes in tabular form and it describes the most common creative methods with
regard to their aims and results. It is explained how to work with the methods
and what kind of transfer they allow. Furthermore the advantage of each method
is demonstrated.
Explorative
Research: Relevance of visual learning for specific target groups
With the
project we built up on current findings related both to basic skills and
acquisition of informal competences in order to find out how the so called
"visual learning" eases the process of learning. In order to find some evidence
for our assumptions we interviewed learners with reading and writing
difficulties and so called "third age learners". We focused on their learning
biography and the role of symbols, pictograms and pictures play during a
lifetime.

References
Within the
project we developed a reader with five main topics which cover important
aspects with regard to visual learning. First of all it is about the relevance
and importance of visual thinking and fragments of theory are presented.
Theoretical constructs are explained in brief and by using examples it is
guaranteed to put knowledge and experience into practice.
In modern day
society the power of image has an enormous influence. It is necessary to
understand certain functions of images and to know about elements and principles
of visual design. Methods of visual learning and information about learning
preferences give a lot of suggestions and ideas for practice. Finally there is
practical advice “In Search of the free image: Creative commons and cost-free
clipart”. For further information references are given regarding all topics.
Country
specific information
Within the
project we explored the state of the art on visual learning in the participating
partner countries. The reports describe the development of visual learning in
each country as well as the current questions and challenges. They also present
good practice examples.
