Project objectives

The project objectives can be subsumed in development goals, research objectives and transfer targets.

Development goals

The EULE project aims at developing an online learning offer for the target group of adult / continuing education teachers, to evaluate it at the trial level and then to put it into operation. The learning offer is supposed to

  • be free of charge;
  • be tied to relevant challeging situations of adult pedagogic practice ("Situational approach");
  • develop knowledge and skills in those areas that are at the core of professional pedagogical skills of teachers in adult education and continuing education;
  • operationalise learning activities for two competence levels, following a step-by-step model of competency development, which can be connected to the DQR / EQF;
  • provide learning activities for 25 different learning areas;
  • integrate learning opportunities of third-party providers whenever this is meaningful (for example, the online case laboratory of the University of Tübingen for videobased case studies);
  • use networking structures for the development of a peer-learning community;
  • provide connections to other learning systems used in the field;
  • connect as a learning area to the existing portal wb-web.

Research objectives

Furthermore, the project follows several research goals that combine basic and application oriented approaches to continueosly optimise provided content in terms of quality, accpeptance and effects. Therefore, we are aiming at accompanying evaluation of the development and usage of the learning area. The German Institute for Adult Education tries to gain insight into specific learning processes of adults.

Research will focus on the following three areas:

  1. Systematic research on the relation of content and competence development
  2. Analysis of the effects of learning theories and didactical settings on adults
  3. Accompanying evaluation of the learning area with regard to usage and multiplication

Research will include

  • analysing usage behavior
  • surveying the target audience
  • intervention studies with regard to learning behavior, learning effects and transfer success of the development of professional teaching
  • implementation studies to integrate and disseminate the learning arrangements into further education practice (e.g., train-the-trainer seminars)

Transfer targets

In the mid-term perspective, the OWL learning area should establish itself as central instrument for webbased (further) education of teachers in all areas of adult education.

In order to reach a critical mass of user, the development of effective communication and support strategies is another project goal. An important role is played by key players in further education (e.g., federations and umbrella organizations), providers of train-the-trainer seminars with whom partnerships are built, and social media activities. The structure of the wb-web supporters is used as a starting point with great potential.

In order to be practically successful, the offer must be appropriately intertwined with existing offers in the field, without being in competition to existing offers. Rather, the portal provides a complementary online add-on for existing trainings. Partnerships with providers of train-the-trainer seminars are targeted for this purpose. These partnerships create conditions that allow partners to provide content in the OWL learning area and, in return, to make use of our arrangements on the basis of open cc-by-sa licensing.

Project benefits

The central benefit is an enhanced practice in adult education. This benefit is achieved as soon as the learning area is used to a wider extent and the underlying learning effects occur. This benefit is achieved through a didactic concept which exploits the potential of online-based learning as well as the needs of the target group to obtain solutions for practical problems of action. Competence acquisition is partly carried out in the background. The improvement of pedagogic-psychological knowledge and didactic competences of the teachers is regarded as a central key to improving the quality of adult education and further education.
