Abstract
Subjects move and act in spatial contexts and through their actions, they create spaces. This also applies to adult learning and to the professional practice of adult education, yet the systematic incorporation of spatial aspects into adult education research to date has remained marginal. This publication takes the category of space as a focal point, with the various chapters defining and honing its meaning for adult education. It brings together the relevant theoretical discourses, summarizes current research findings and provides theoretical foundations. The category of space in adult education is examined here not only with reference to physical spaces of learning, but also to social space, digital space and regional context. With this combination of different perspectives, it is possible to advance the discourse on space in adult education, to “measure” the significance of the topic of space for practitioners and for scholarly discourse, and to pinpoint fundamental areas for further research and development.
