Photos, pictures, pictograms, symbols and icons are quite easy to find with the help of picture search functions of the big search engines. With a few mouseclicks, they can be easily integrated into a project-website or private homepage. But attention: Disregarding the copyright could become expensive quickly.

Nowhere else offenses against the copyright regulations are more prosecuted than in Germany. Despite the existence of similar laws in other EU-Countries, admonitions are not an issue because there is no money involved.

In connection with the EU-project “visuaLearning” we receive questions regarding how to deal with copyright-issues time and again. Before publishing contents like pictures, graphic works, texts, buttons, logos etc. you should consider some important aspects:

  • General validity:
    Nearly everything published in the internet is protected by copyright-law and must not be used without permission of copyright holder. This also applies if, for instance, a photo lacks the corresponding copy right indication ©.
  • Private or public:
    You are allowed to make copies of the work of third parties for “private use”, as long as the contents are not copyright protected. To load down a photo from the web onto your PC is legally not a problem. As soon as you put the photo online on a website, it means the website will be published – and this publishing is not considered private use.
  • Is it legal to modify original pictures?
    This is the case if you use the original picture only as an inspiration and create a new picture, which in its essence is not recognizable as the original. It is not legitimate to modify a protected picture, for instance, with a modifying programme (Photoshop etc.). The danger of being caught is substantial. Many picture databases are protected through digital watermarks or other identification tools.
  • Seaching the “free pricture”
    In the internet you can find many databases which provide free of cost photos and pictures. Please take note of the licensing conditions thoroughly. In spite of advertising “royalty-free” usage, they often only apply for private use and not for publishing in the internet.
  • Trademark protected logos are to be used carefully, too! Because of many controversies, trademark-owners are reacting very sensitive. In case of doubts it is recommendable to ask for publishing rights in writing.
  • Valid for Germany: Pictures of photographers who are dead for more than 70 years can be published without permission. The copyright in these cases is expired, meaning they are “common-free”.
  • An alternative – Creativ Common Licenses
    Creativ commons exists since 2001 and provides licenses which give copyright-holders the possibility to decide how their works can be used, it id est: copied, passed on and modified.
  • As a user of cc-contents, you have security about the legal forms of usage and can use photos free of costs while being legally protected. Since last summer the cc-licenses for german copyright – which differs drastically from US-copyright – have been adjusted.

2. Qualification workshop “Visual Learning” within partnership

Within the project we will develop a workshop concept for the qualification of trainers and teachers. First step was a workshop for the project team and for representatives from the local network hosted by the coordinator on the 1st of February 2007.

Now we will start with providing workshops within the local networks of participating countries.

Main topics are

  • Relevance and importance of visual thinking (fragments of theory)
  • Methods of visual learning
  • The power of images
  • Learner types (blended model)
  • Project learning with new media.

The workshop for instructors are designed for practical applicability. Next to short theoretical introductions they are focused on methods and applicability in visual learning.

The workshops will take place in May and June 2007.

3. Focus group discussions with students/learners

As part of the EU Project “visuaLearning” we are holding focus group meetings with students/learners.

The purpose of these sessions is to gather, from a sample of current students in a variety of settings,

  1. their experience of dealing with visual learning in everyday life;
  2. their perception of how useful classroom learning is to this experience; and their ideas for what would be helpful to their learning.

The first group discussions have already been held with learners of literacy and foreign language in current classes. Especially students of literacy and basic education were highly engaged in the group discussion. It quickly showed that those learners compensate their writing and reading deficiencies through “visual alternatives”. The orientation through pictures, symbols and prictograms plays a significant role and is clearly recognized by the students.

The results of the group discussions will be published soon on our homepage.
