The objective of the project titled Literacy/Basic Education State of the Art is the theoretical discussion of the subject of literacy. This is complemented through the review of good practices from various countries within and outside of Europe. The examples depict innovative projects in the area of adult literacy and provide options of transferability. In addition, the inclusion of different countries contributes to the international exchange of experiences within the area of adult education.

Theoretically the project focuses on three main areas:

Terminology - Terminology reflects a specific understanding of a subject matter. The understandings of and statements about literacy have far-reaching consequences for political conceptualizations and their translations into the practical field. The analysis of applied terminology is relevant for the enhancement of an understanding of the subject matter.

Literacy and Migration - Movements of people around the world have lead to heterogeneity, to new dimensions and manifestations of living together. Multilingualism, social and cultural diversity challenge the implementation of concepts and programs also in the area of literacy.

Literacy and Inclusion - People with low levels of literacy are often regarded as living at the margins of society. The analysis of conceptualizations of marginalization and their effects is the necessary prerequisites for supporting processes of inclusion.

Good practices examples of good practices with options of transferability will be taken from the following countries:

Germany England Norway
South Africa Brazil Australia
Spain

The reports will be available in German and English.
