The book provides an overview of the current situation in Adult and Continuing Education in Austria. At the beginning stands an introduction into the Austrian education system together with a delineation of the historical evolution of Adult and Continuing Education. The portrait thoroughly informs about the legal foundations, governance approaches as well as institutions, quality assurance, financing, provision and participation. Moreover, the occupational field and strategies for professionalization, Adult and Continuing Education within the tertiary sector and international cooperation are being discussed. On the grounds that the field of Adult and Continuing Education in Austria has significantly changed in recent years, the portrait had to be reedited. Major developments have occurred in the area of professionalization, quality assurance and financing schemes but also with regard to internationality, restructuring of provision and education counselling. Not least, higher education institutions intensively act as providers of Adult and Continuing Education and represent places of research and professionalization. Presenting current tendencies and perspectives, the portrait supports the political discourse on crucial issues for the improvement of Adult and Continuing Education in Austria, understood as commitment to a democratic culture. The portrait addresses responsible actors in the field of Adult and Continuing Education as well as persons active in the field, students and all people interested.
