Teachers and trainers can only act on what they notice. In line with use-inspired basic research, the question pursued in this book is how teachers’ and trainers’ competence to perceive, analyze, and diagnose situations of learning and instruction can be enhanced resulting in long-term effects. The present state of research with regard to adult education science’s professionalization discourse, teacher education research, competence as well as expertise research is drawn upon in order to gain a non-domain specific and cross-disciplinary theoretical background on teachers’ and trainers’ professional development. In light of current research findings on learning with videos, a generic concept of video case-based learning for teachers and trainers is developed and empirically investigated. Data include written case analyses, questionnaires, and videotaped small group interactions; they are analyzed qualitatively as well as quantitatively. In the (quasi-)experimental studies presented, the teacher training concept proves to be effective directly and in the long run. It works without cognitive overload and places.
