Anstelle des alltäglichen Gebens und Nehmens als Teil pädagogischen Handelns sollte – so der Autor – das Lehren als Geben ohne Erwartung von Gegenleistung verstanden werden. Als Teil einer Ethik der Anerkennung führe eine solche Haltung dazu, utilitaristische Bildungsvorstellungen zu überwinden und Lernende wie Lehrende als eigenständige Subjekte anzuerkennen.
An Fallbeispielen zeigt der Autor auf, wie Wissenschaft die Praxis von Lehrkräften der Erwachsenen- und Weiterbildung unterstützen kann. Wissenschaft für Praxis zu nutzen, ist kein Wert an sich, sondern Ausdruck der Verantwortung von Lehrenden für das Lernen der Teilnehmenden.

Teachers’ knowledge about teaching methods is an important facet of adult education teachers’ pedagogical/psychological knowledge (PPK). The authors examine whether and how this knowledge is correlated with the educational background and the teaching experience of N?=?212 adult education teachers.
