Why have we lately seen a renaissance of the concept of „region“ in the social sciences? The author explores changing perspectives on this concept against a background of technical and social development. While the electronic media allow networking as a form of cooperation that is motivated by functional aspects and exceeds regional boundaries, cooperation within the physical boundaries of a region is facilitated by ease of personal contacts, shared facilities and common institutions. Both tend…
The paper discusses the significance of lifelong learning as a foundation for sustainable development at a local level, explores the UNESCO concept of a learning city, and highlights the importance of sustaining the process of building learning cities.

The author prefers the term of »sustainable learning« compared with »education for sustainable development«, because she sees the numerous non-institutionalised learning processes being included. The UN decade is a challenge for a variety of learning places, protagonists and target groups. She confronts the chances for the decade with several social, above all individual barriers, which complicate the learning of sustainability. Besides the value attitudes and emotions above all here the factor…
Matthias Pfüller outlines the historical development of central and peripheral regions in the former GDR and former West Germany. Both qualities are found to be relatively persistent. Still, there have been successful attempts at bringing centre and periphery closer together, such as the FRG „educational offensive“ in the 1960s and similar efforts in the GDR. Since the 1990s, however, Germany’s inner dissimilarities have not been further reduced, but are rather on the increase. The author dou…
Methodogical deliberations on network analyses The network analysis as an empirical examination method for gathering social relationships is presently gaining increasing dissemination in different branches of study and fields. In the contribution network analysis basic approaches are the framework for reference and analysis for research works in the field of adult education are illuminated. In doing so a special focus is placed on the development of adequate examination concepts. Concluding …
In the face of accelerated structural change (“transformation society“) in-company further education can no longer just rely on familiar forms of learning and teaching. It must evolve into a form of guidance for personal development, by which managers are directed towards continuous introspection (“culture of reflection”). The author shows that such phenomena can be empirically shown to exist at this moment in time, and outlines in which way they can be seen as pedagogical communication, by way…
