Popular education is a term which has been used for a considerable time. At the outset, however, it should be pointed out that there are multiple perspectives, but they do not “speak” much to each other. There is a tendency to define popular education in narrow and formulaic terms, according to which tradition one is drawing on. I counter this by discussing four traditions and attempt to distil common features across the multiplicity.

Im Rahmen des Projekts „Alphabit“ wurden mit Kursleitenden aus dem Bereich Alphabetisierung und Grundbildung telefonische Interviews durchgeführt. Sie konzentrierten sich u. a. auf die Aspekte „Teilnehmende in Kursen“, „Status der Kursleitenden“ und „Neue Medien“. Thema der Umfrage des wbmonitor 2008 war die Personalentwicklung bei Weiterbildungsanbietern. Für verschiedene Beschäftigtengruppen wurde ausgewählten Aspekten aus Sicht der Anbieter nachgegangen – so ging es um Weiterbildungsbedarfe des eigenen Personals, um Formen der Unterstützung der Weiterbildung der Lehrkräfte sowie um Kompetenzanforderungen an das Leitungspersonal. Diesbezügliche Ergebnisse des standardisierten Fragenkatalogs sind bereits an verschiedenen Stellen publiziert.
