Competence-adaptive, user-oriented search engine for authentic language learning materials – Development and evaluation of a tool for supporting teachers for adult literacy and German as a second language

From 2017 to 2023, KANSAS received funding from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) as part of the AlphaDekade initiative.

Objective

The aim of KANSAS was to help teachers of literacy, basic education and German as a second language select suitable language-learning materials. The web-based search engine allows users to search for texts by topic and linguistic complexity, enabling them to precisely tailor materials to learners’ proficiency levels and interests. KANSAS also offers a checking function for self-generated texts. KANSAS was developed through interdisciplinary collaboration with Eberhard Karls University Tübingen and the Mercator Institute for the Promotion of German as a Second Language at the University of Cologne.

The search engine has undergone scientific evaluation and has been refined several times with a focus on user needs. It was launched in September 2023. Empirical studies confirm its high usability and effectiveness for lesson planning. KANSAS therefore makes a valuable long-term contribution to providing digital support for teachers and promoting participation through education.
