Im 18. Jahrhundert waren die Debating Clubs weit verbreitet und es durfte, unabhängig vom Geschlecht, jeder, der wollte, teilnehmen. Die meisten Mitglieder gehörten jedoch der neu entstandenen Mittelschicht an. Ein berühmter Vorläufer der Debating-Clubs war der Rota Club in London. Diese Clubs hatten einen maßgeblichen Anteil an dem Aufkommen der Aufklärung.
Im Jahr 1780 ließ der preußische König Friedrich der Zweite eine Preisfrage ausschreiben, die sowohl eine philosophische als auch politische Brisanz mit sich brachte.
