Die Bedeutung von Alphabetisierung und Grundbildung in nationalen wie internationalen Bildungsdebatten ist unbestritten. Eine Vielzahl der in Deutschland laufenden Projekte wird im Jahr 2010 Arbeitsergebnisse präsentieren und erste Nachweise für deren erfolgreiche Implementierung in die gesellschaftliche Praxis erbringen. Using the example of the town of Marl, located on the edge of the Ruhr area, the author points out the significance of the interaction between education and culture for urban development. He also shows which paths a town may take to deal with the structural change.

With examples drawn from literature, theatre and real life he underpins his theory of an increasing malfunction of language as a means of communication.
