The author bridges the gap between culture and education by dealing with two sides of the coin. He initially observes a currently active interest in culture. Cultural education is a generally accepted objective in the field of cultural policy. By using a historical outline, the author illustrates this attribution to a lack of visions in cultural policies. Resistance against education and learning as a result of pedagogical and didactic acting: The article reports two research projects in adult education at the University of Kaiserslautern focusing identity-relevant and emotional aspects of learning resistance. While both aspects are rather neglected in the research on education and learning they are substantial for the understanding of learning resistance phenomena as well as for the reconstruction of the own pedagogical practice.

Cognition, emotion and mental self-regulation: on the nascency and solution of inner conflicts The contribution provides a short overview of several results on nascency and solution of inner conflicts which in the frame of a research programme on mental self-regulation in learning processes of adults were gained. Auch bei Angeboten in der Erwachsenen- und Weiterbildung wird über Fakten und Fakes gestritten. So wurde jüngst den Volkshochschulen vorgeworfen, in der Gesundheitsbildung zu viele Kurse anzubieten, deren Inhalte zu esoterisch, nicht wissenschaftlich fundiert seien und damit zur »Volksverdummung« beitrügen. Durch verschiedene Faktoren kam es in Österreich zu einer Universitätsausdehnung. Die Wiener Universität hatte eine Vorbildfunktion für diese Ausdehnung und ergriff auch die Initiative zur Einrichtung des Deutschen Volkshochschultages. Eine tragende Rolle spielte zudem Ludo Moritz Hartmann.
