Einst galt die Zukunft als Schicksal, dem man ausgeliefert war – heute verstehen wir sie als gestaltbaren und pluralen Möglichkeitsraum. Doch das Gestalten vielfältiger Zukünfte will gelernt sein. weiter bilden fragt, welche Rolle Erwachsenenbildung dabei spielt und was für ihre eigene Zukunft wichtig sein wird.
Die 17 Nachhaltigkeitsziele und damit auch Bildung für Nachhaltige Entwicklung sind durchzogen von Zielkonflikten. Wie mit dieser inhärenten Ambiguität in der Bildungspraxis produktiv umgegangen werden kann, zeigt die Autorin am Beispiel des Programms der vhs Essen und plädiert dafür, Ambiguitäten als Ausgangspunkt und Ziel von Aushandlungsprozessen zu verstehen.
Anna Siemsen beschäftigte sich mit einem arbeitsbezogenen Bildungsbegriff und der doppelten Herausforderung der Frauenbildung als hauswirtschaftliche und berufsbildende Aufgabenstellung. Zwischen 1923 und 1933 war sie in vielfältigen Zusammenhängen der Erwachsenenbildung einbezogen. Ihr bedeutendster Artikel zur Erwachsenenbildung „Extensive und intensive Bildung“, indem sie ihre sozialistische Position im Richtungsstreit darlegte, erschien in der Zeitschrift „Sozialistische Bildung“ (1929).
