The article describes how community learning, a special form of adult education in Ireland, generates benefits for both the individual and the society. The authors’ elaborations are empirically based on the reports »At the Forefront«, »Community Education: More than just a Course« and »Sowing the Seeds of Social Change«, conducted by the Irish National Adult Learning Organization (AONTAS).

Die politische Zeitung spielte als Lesestoff der unteren Stände eine wichtige Rolle im späten 18. und im 19. Jahrhundert. Die Zeitschrift der „Rässonirende Dorfkonvent, eine gemeinnützige ökonomisch-moralische-politische Schrift für den Bürger und Landmann“, die von Johann C. Thon 1786 bis 1788 herausgegeben wurde, war solch ein volksaufklärerisches Medium. Im nachfolgenden wird ein Beispiel aus der Zeitung vorgestellt.
Im 18. Jahrhundert waren die Debating Clubs weit verbreitet und es durfte, unabhängig vom Geschlecht, jeder, der wollte, teilnehmen. Die meisten Mitglieder gehörten jedoch der neu entstandenen Mittelschicht an. Ein berühmter Vorläufer der Debating-Clubs war der Rota Club in London. Diese Clubs hatten einen maßgeblichen Anteil an dem Aufkommen der Aufklärung.

Franz Pöggeler (1926 -2009), war einer der produktivsten Pädagogen des 20. Jahrhunderts. Das gilt sowohl für die Breite der Themengebiete, mit denen er sich beschäftigte, als auch für die vielfältigen Publikationsorte, an denen er veröffentlichte, und die hohe Anzahl der Veröffentlichungen, die nachgewiesen werden konnten. Das Diktum der besonderen Produktivität gilt auch für die große Palette seines praktischen Engagements für die (Erwachsenen-) Pädagogik.
