The historiography of adult education has painted an almost entirely optimistic picture of enlightenment until today. The actors are defined as people who are willing to learn and capable of being educated. Thanks to the advances in the enlightenment process they mature into responsible citizens. Der österreichische Nationalökonom und Wissenschaftstheoretiker Otto Neurath ist insbesondere durch seine Arbeiten an bildpädagogischen Visualisierungen von Wissen und Wissenschaft bekannt geworden. Sie sind bekannt als Wiener Methode der Bildstatistik bzw. später Isotype („International System of Typographic Picture Education“).

In 2004, seven European universities embarked on a project to develop a European Master’s Programme in Adult Education (EMAE). The German Institute for Adult Education followed the project closely as an external evaluator. The consortium developed a curriculum consisting of a common core (70 ECTS) and of university specific courses (50 ECTS).
