The following article focuses the mostly neglected relation between identity and learning by reconstructing foreign learning efforts by adults. In spite of educational policy's proclamation of (continuous) lifelong learning real learning processes are characterized by various discontinuities. Adults deal with these discontinuities by perceiving, describing and structuring them dependent on their self-images as learners. Interpretations of interviews with adult language learners supply evidence …
„Learn habitus“ has its roots in the concept of habitus by the French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu. According to Bourdieu the „habitus“ is represented in the whole of all signs of life, i.e. the daily routine, job, clothes, behaviour, taste, value judgement, in which a person is bedded and which has become the person’s second nature. If our behaviour can be understood as ways of expressing the habits, so can be the way we learn. The learn habitus represents the whole of the learning disposition …
The aim of wider-benefits research is to record the complexity of benefits and other effects on both the personal and the societal levels deriving from the individual’s educational efforts. The central issue is: “What changes are affected by learning interventions?” Schuller/Desjardins 2010, p. 229). The exploration of the wider benefits of learning is still in its infancy. Pioneers in this field of research are, in particular, to be found in the UK – the Centre for Research on the Wider B…
