Nikolai Frederik Severin Grundtvig war ein Verfasser mehrerer pädagogischer Schriften. Des Weiteren entwickelte er das Konzept der Volkshochschule, welches sich stark an den christlichen Auffassungen, u.a. auch der Erweckung, orientierte und eine lebensweltbezogene Aufklärung, insbesondere auch für die Unterschichten in dänischer Sprache forderte.
Kennzeichnend für das Antigonish Movement war es, genossenschaftliche Bestrebungen, Lernformen der Erwachsenenbildung und ländliche Gemeinwesenarbeit zusammen zu führen. Ihr Ziel war es, das Scheitern der Geschäfte zu verhindern und für jede Gemeinde ein erfolgreiches Geschäftsmodell zu entwickeln. Unterrichtet wurden genossenschaftliches Wirtschaften, Buchführung, Mathematik, Ökonomie, öffentliches Sprechen und bürgerschaftliches Engagement.

Voluntary engagement is firmly integrated in the structures of our society. To be able to foster it, one has to understand who is engaged and why. Drawing on data of PIAAC and CiLL surveys, the authors show that age is not a relevant factor in why someone is engaged. Rather, education is a key factor in taking up volunteering activities. This, it is shown, is also true for non-formal activities of adult education.
A video-study of language courses in adult education analyses the transformation of a learning side into a pedagogical space. The definition of pedagogical space is linked to the theory of social space. Space is thus viewed as an arrangement and perception between human beings and social goods.
