As means of state regulation of adult education, cooperation and networking have increasingly gained importance in recent years. Yet, deficits of such regulation have come to light. This article focuses on such supportive structures, systemizes different forms of support and outlines a theoretical approach for the analysis of inter-organizational network consultation.
Dietrich, Stephan; Herr, Monika: Organisational development and new learning cultures The theme “new teaching and learning cultures” is a thematic focus in the professional discourse of adult education for a few years already. One consequence of the hightened attention is an increasingly differentiated understanding of what can be regarded as the ”new teaching and learning cultures”. It can be observed that the treatment of the theme does not allow a restriction on the questions of didactics…
Exclusion by precarious inclusion and the “new spirit” of adult education “The social question in Europe has a new name: Exclusion” (Kronauer 2002, p. 9). A growing number of groups of the society are in danger of being excluded from the support of the society: the shield against social risks, in the first place unemployment, illness and poverty is increasingly becoming weaker; compensation benefits against a missing justice and selectivity such as for example adult education training opport…
Adult educators often have to work with a small budget; at the same time, they are committed to educational ideals. By examining the mission statements of German adult education centres (Volkshochschulen), the article shows how this tension between the ‘guiding institutions’ of education and cost-efficiency is reflected in the values of these education providers. For this purpose the course descriptions of 32 programs were analyzed and 10 responsibl…
The article presents a number of photographs of the Franz Pöggeler estate, which is preserved in the archive of the German Institute of Adult Education. The historic pictures vary between ecclesiastic-monumental architectural photography and simple snap shots and illustrate the differences of learning and teaching arrangements in the history of adult education centres. Even though the author regards the photographs as evidence of a mentality-historically obsolete period, they still indicate the…
The author provides a row of examples for the overlapping of practical social work and adult education existing already today. In the light of the task of making it possible for all people to come along in the accelerated life and work life, both disciplines should go together more strongly. Adult education needs to open up to social work and the social work needs to understand itself as being pervaded by adult education.
