The paper is based upon a qualitative-empirical study in the field of basic education for adults (literacy, numeracy, language, and computer skills). Program analyses are considered as genuine methods of research in further education. The basic understanding is that innovation is not only an invention of new methods, but also an implementation of existing methods in new ways. The most important approaches of program analysis will be presented and discussed concerning their alteration. This is also relevant for qualitative research in further education in general.

Case studies The contribution describes principles and possible yields for the implementation of case studies in the area of adult education. The research practical implementation itself is deliniated with an example from a research project from the area of learning research. Amplified are especially the central phases of the approach to the research field and the interpretation work.
This contribution focuses on the significance of analyzing learning processes in case-based learning in continuing education. These analyses play a crucial role in finding explanations for the lack of effective instructional interventions. Furthermore, they allow for the immediate review of assumptions on learning mechanisms. The report outlines the outcome of scientific monitoring of the educational and continuing educational counselling centre in Munich with regard to the effectiveness of counselling in the field of continuing education. Results prove the high contentment level among those seeking advice even after a longer time interval. Looking back, the respondents were still motivated to actively take their education in hand; some participate in further education.
