Based on data collected in the OECD project »Social Outcomes of Learning (SOL)«, empirical research findings and resulting policy recommendations were generated in the report »Improving Health and Social Cohesion through Education«, which are presented in this shortened and translated version. Due to the overall sparse empirical evidence of benefit research, future research forms and necessary methodological approaches are outlined.

Gegründet wurde die landesweite, und insbesondere von den Gewerkschaften geförderte Organisation 1903 von Albert Mansbridge und seiner Ehefrau Frances Jane Pringle unter dem Namen „Association to Promote the Higher Education of Working Men". 1905 folgte mit der Zulassung von Frauen die Umbenennung. In den Anfangsjahren wurde eine enge Partnerschaft mit den Universitäten aufgebaut. Heute ist sie die größte, aus Spenden finanzierte Erwachsenenbildungseinrichtung Englands.

This contribution summarizes the most important trends in further education in Germany as they were elaborated in a secondary analytic research project of the DIE (Deutsches Institut für Erwachsenbildung – German Institute for Adult Education) in 2007.
