Working biographies today do not last for life. The author describes the concepts of labour entrepreneur as a new type of labour which means that employees put their competence to the market. Characteristics of the labour entrepreneur is responsibilityfor the organisation and the marketing of one’s own competence. Do-it-yourself literature opens up a broad autodidactic field - though explicit references to "learning" are hardly relevant. In the light of a complex constellation of a contemporary production of knowledge and values, the repertoire of adult education is capable of taking a critical look at the postulated performance of do-it-yourself literature, as well as (re)discovering dimensions such as reactions, physicality or emotions of the learning self.

For 30 years, the author has been director of the communal adult education institute “Volkshochschule” at a middle-size town in Southern Germany. In 1998, the costs of 3 million DM were financed jointly by the town (50%), the participants of the courses (40%) and the Land Baden-Württemberg (10%).
