Die konstruktivistische Erkenntnis, dass der "lernende Erwachsene" ein Konstrukt bleiben muss, die Tatsache, dass empirisches Wissen über Teilnahme und Nicht-Teilnahme an Weiterbildung zu gering ist und viele Aspekte mehr rücken die Teilnehmenden in das Zentrum des Interesses.
