Differentiating ageing and old age it is argued that a separate life stage “old age” is to be understood as a social construction. Ageing must not be conceptualized as a uniform and unidirectional process. Instead, physiological-biological, psychological, and social ageing are somehow independent processes following different developmental curves. Der Autor stellt acht zentrale Kriterien der Gestaltung kompetenzentwickelnder Lehre vor, die einerseits auf Basis einer Literaturrecherche und Beforschung, andererseits auf Erfahrungen im Bereich der Beratung und Gestaltung entsprechender Lernangebote in Bildungsinstitutionen fußen. Diese Kriterien dekliniert er anschaulich vor dem Hintergrund eines kleinen Lernangebotes durch, welches in der Erwachsenenbildung durchaus denkbar ist: einem Fotokurs für Anfänger.

The author presents examples of good practice and defines central tasks and processes of modern libraries, which are regarded as central learning spaces for adults. Using the criteria »shortage – surplus«, »consumption – co-creation« and »product – process«, the relevant social challenges for libraries and adult education are described. It becomes evident that libraries and adult education are in a period of transition, which requires suitable architectural solutions.
