Online communities have been praised as utopian realms of free, equal and unrestricted communication by some; others have condemned them as anti-social pseudo-communities. Both attitudes, however, focus on the technical framework and do not take the actual quality of the interaction into account. The author describes types of interaction in virtual communities in general, then looks at four types of communities dedicated specifically to learning, and explores their potential.
Teaching and learning situations are only super ficially described as transfer of knowledge. Beneath that surface complex processes of understanding influence the teacher-learner as well as the learner-learner interaction. Virtual interaction or virtual silence? Setting out from the point of her study on resisting learning in the internet and a short clarification of her conception of learning, the author explores substantiation samples for the virtual silence in interactive situations when learning with the medium internet.
Using the example of the town of Marl, located on the edge of the Ruhr area, the author points out the significance of the interaction between education and culture for urban development. He also shows which paths a town may take to deal with the structural change.
