The education cheque, introduced in North Rhine-Westphalia, is a funding instrument which has been running since 2006 and is based on demand. This article presents the central results of an independent evaluation carried out in 2008. On national and international level, a number of alternative financing models for lifelong learning processes are being discussed: self financing by the learners, individual income transfer assurance systems, individual education bonus systems, state funding oder financing by companies or fonds.
