The article examines the development in demand for the independently creative area of cultural adult education. It also focuses on stakeholders and developments of a new conceptual meaning. The authors particularly call the gender role for independently creative programmes into question and develop hypotheses to explain the dominant proportion of women.
The Grundtvig project European Intercultural Competence Programmes (EICP) conducted at the DIE tests further education measures for administrative bodies that involve intercultural competence, not just as far as staff development is concerned, but also in terms of organisation development. The concept is based on the idea of civilian dialogue and addresses heads of administration as well as representatives of migrants’ organisations.

From 1992 to 2007 a considerable amount of German and EU funding was put into development projects described as “Qualification Development Management” (German acronym: QUEM) and aimed to support the quality of vocational qualification structures in the former GDR. QUEM was sponsored by the ABWF (Study Group for Corporate Continuing Education Research). The article provides an insight into the first results of the PIAAC study and links it with mixed-method and qualitative-empirical approaches as well as the development of competencies in life course. For this purpose, it shows two studies which focus an individual development approach in contrast to the quantitative assessment approach of PIAAC. The aim is to present advantages and disadvantages of different research perspectives.
The author unmasks »education for sustainable development « as an empty phrase, which has failed as a trademark in public relations. Not even the teachers would know what exactly is concealed behind it textually. Per decree an orientational concept of politics and administration is prescribed in order to encounter practitioners with great reserve. Ultimately education for sustainable development is nothing more than plainly modern education.
