Sprache ist ein zentrales Medium von Kultur und Kommunikation. Bildung lehrt Sprache(n) und verwendet Sprache(n). Im Diskurs über Bildung und Spracherwerb, zumal unter den Vorzeichen des Literacy-Begriffs, dominiert ein schriftkultureller Fokus.
