In his text, the author traces six predominant viewpoints in the USA in relation to adult education and at the same time develops an overall picture of US-American adult education.
The author pursues the issue whether gender equity has been achieved in continuing educational participation. According to Friebel, this question can only be answered if the life and work contexts are considered as a biographic regulative of the participation in continuing education. The underlying empirical data is based on the longitudinal study »Hamburger Biografie- und Lebenslaufpanel« (HBLP), in which findings about the correlation of gender, parenthood and participation in continuing educ…
Educational research is often focused on biographies. Literacy and basic education frequently use knowledge about biographies as a means for educational support within the scope of catch-up education (“second chance”). The article discusses how biographically generated knowledge can be transferred into pedagogical practice. The authors give up on the idea of a direct “utilization” of biographical insights into practical work – the yield is rather to indirectly stimulate and irritate professiona…
Case-reconstructive quality circles have hardly ever been tried out in adult education. Under the direction of trainers, course teachers reflect the quality of their work in a mutual process. Their own teaching/learning situation serves as illustrative material. It is self-evident that this method relies on mutuality and must be voluntary. The method, which is explained with the aid of a practice example from the KVHS Northeim, has its origins in health care.
Course teachers who cooperate in quality assurance programmes of their institutions tend to find this work gratifying in various ways: they improve their professional background, they get to look at their institutions from a new and interesting angle, and they profit from organisational improvements arising from quality projects. If, however, excessive expectations are addressed to them in the course of the quality discussion, these may readily be reflected back onto the institution and its inf…
The argument in this article is based on a concept that defines values as ‘big principles’. Although the work of education institutions is based on values in that sense, it cannot guarantee those values itself. That is why it is important to not only raise an awareness of values in internal debates among adult educators but also to speak about them explicitly in the classroom. The author believes that pursuing these two strategies makes more sense than formulating a specific ‘ethics of continui…
Constructive approaches to the EQF and DQR - Basic and advanced certificate model for further education teachers This article presents a specific qualifications framework for the sector of further education, consisting of a two-stage model (basic and advanced certificates). This touches on the discussion about the EQF and DQR as a motivation and opportunity for the professionalisation of further education. The model takes up examples from Austria and Switzerland and is aligned toward prelimi…
The focus of this article is on the necessity of competences and qualifications in the lower job segment of the labour market and the applicability of educational programs to acquire these and encourage people with low skills to participate in lifelong learning. Various requirement profiles of literacy in the work context are described. The importance of operational multipliers used in job-related basic education is pointed out. Exemplary methods, used in GRAWiRa in order to concretize basic ed…
