The author has collected self-reports of functional illiterates and questioned them on their “joy potential“. Three qualitatively set up analyses of the 1990s serve as sources. The contribution shows that the participation in literacy courses can cause a significant increase of self-confidence by overcoming experiences of deficit. The experience of attention and support is seen as encouraging and it contributes considerably to take over responsibility for one’s own life.
It has recently become widely accepted that reluctance to learning in adults may be explained by features inherent in the (presentation of the) subject matter, which may be perceived by the learner as being unsuited to his or her needs. On national and international level, a number of alternative financing models for lifelong learning processes are being discussed: self financing by the learners, individual income transfer assurance systems, individual education bonus systems, state funding oder financing by companies or fonds. The author describes the different models recommending mixed cooperative forms for the German educational system.
