The author provides a row of examples for the overlapping of practical social work and adult education existing already today. In the light of the task of making it possible for all people to come along in the accelerated life and work life, both disciplines should go together more strongly. Adult education needs to open up to social work and the social work needs to understand itself as being pervaded by adult education.

Ansätze und Lösungsstrategien von Finanzierungsproblemen der Weiterbildung bekommen im Zusammenhang des lebenslangen Lernens prinzipielle Bedeutung für die Zukunft. Auf dem zweiten DIE-Forum im Dezember 1999 wurden die Probleme der Bewertung von Weiterbildung, der unterschiedlichen Gerechtigkeitsprinzipien und Finanzierungsmodelle von unterschiedlichen Perspektiven her analysiert: Ein spannender Überblick über eine folgenreiche Fragestellung.
Mit ihrer Reform zum »Kontinuierlichen Lernen« hat die finnische Regierung Instrumente zur weitreichenden Anerkennung non-formal erworbener Kompetenzen geschaffen. The authors explain their model of transferring self-directed learning elements from the context of projects to their daily work as adult education teachers in the Volkshochschule des Landkreises Gießen (adult education school). They focus on usability and investigate the learners' view on self-directed learning. Their results: If resources are used wisely, the implementation of self-directed learning is possible and learners appreciate it.
