Based on the assumption that the findings gained during the PIAAC study provide an impetus for the development of demand-driven support opportunities, the author points out the needs for improvement in the field of basic education. In her dissertation, the author collected and evaluated self-assessments of language study travellers travelling with Carl Duisburg Centres. 90 participants were questioned quantitatively. In addition to the expected competence improvement of foreign languages, the flexibility and mobility as well as intercultural competences were increased. The competence acquisition in connection to the participants’ individual ages was investigated in a supplementary qualitative research.

The article provides an insight into the first results of the PIAAC study and links it with mixed-method and qualitative-empirical approaches as well as the development of competencies in life course. For this purpose, it shows two studies which focus an individual development approach in contrast to the quantitative assessment approach of PIAAC. The aim is to present advantages and disadvantages of different research perspectives.
The article critically examines PIAAC as well as its objectives. It examines the extent of information provided by PIAAC on untapped competence potential, the needs to improve the acquisition as well as the transfer of competences. It is also an analysis of the study's theoretical and methodological base. At the same time, it reveals the problems and deficiencies of the PIAAC study and offers solutions.

Within vocational training, small and medium-sized enterprises are confronted with various problems and challenges. Abschied nehmen fällt – ebenso wie »aller Anfang« – schwer. Gerade deshalb ist es aber keine Verharmlosung, wenn man im Abschied auch den Vorläufer des Neuanfangs erblickt.
