Emil Adolph Roßmäßler kann als erster freier Dozent der Erwachsenenbildung gelten. Anfang der 1860er Jahre war er Mitgründer des Leipziger Arbeiterbildungsvereins und ein entschiedener Kritiker Ferdinand Lassalles. Für ihn war die Natur der Schlüssel von Emanzipation. Politisch-kulturell vermisste E. A. Roßmäßler insbesondere einen in der Selbstachtung begründeten Freiheitsbegriff in Deutschland.
In his presentation, Paul J. Edelson describes the current state of American adult education and refers to historical backgrounds in the process. He examines the "Learning Society" in the age of technology, i.e. the impacts of computers and the internet on education. He also touches on the American further education market and delineates possible ‘pictures’ and approaches to further education.
Little is known about the qualifications of trainers in further vocational education. Some hold a degree in educational sciences. Peter Faulstich erörtert die Folgen des "Selbstorganisierten, -gesteuerten, -bestimmten Lernens" für das lehrende Personal in der Erwachsenenbildung. Fachliche und soziale Kompetenzen sowie ein vielfältiges Methodenrepertoire sind die grundlegenden Anforderungen an Lehrende.
