Have the European football competitions fostered a European consciousness and European identity? There are unmistakable parallels between the political and economic integration of Europe and the history of European football competitions, but these do not suffice to answer this question in the affirmative. In the run-up to the World Cup, whose slogan is “A Time to Make Friends”, the author discusses integration issues emanating from the naturalisation tests of Federal German Länder from an educa…

This article explores the inherent normative nature of what on the surface appears to be neutral empirical research. Direct and indirect normative influences exercised by empirical research are demonstrated using the example of the PISA studies: (1) their desire to provide knowledge which can help steer policy, (2) the normative nature of their didactical concepts and educational theory, (3) the idea derived from the sequence of studies of adapting classroom instruction to conform with the conc…

At the same time, the participants from Germany develop an appreciation for experience from the “South”, helping dispel the traditional image of …
The author bridges the gap between culture and education by dealing with two sides of the coin. He initially observes a currently active interest in culture. Cultural education is a generally accepted objective in the field of cultural policy. By using a historical outline, the author illustrates this attribution to a lack of visions in cultural policies. Beneficiaries are institutions for cultural education as well as classical institutions for adult education such as adult education centres. …
Education for sustainable development is being practiced exemplary in Sweden, Finland, Great Britain, France and the Netherlands. This outcome is the result of the present attempt of a European comparison in sustainable education. Since reliable indicator systems are absent at present, with which one could measure whether a country practices sustainable development more efficiently than others, the estimation of the author is based on surveys with official institutions and conventional assessme…
