In this article, the dialogue between young and very old people is examined structurally and with regards to contents in the context of education and learning. Topics, interpretations and motivations are the factors which decide how educational and learning processes of different generations can be shaped and understood.
Citizens’ involvement increasingly gains appreciation in the public perception. Also in the adult pedagogical discourse the attention is raised in the context of lifelong learning. European countries, North America and Japan are strongly affected by demographic change and ageing populations. In these countries a discourse emerged about using the potentials of older people and the role of lifelong learning in this process. This text focuses on international results of further educational participation of older people and outlines concepts of learning in later life in Germany.
This article addresses learning, educational and activity-related prospects upon entering into retirement age and the search for meaning in one's career associated with this. The topic is explored at various levels: first of all autobiographically taking the example of a new, self-employed orientation. Trotz vielfältiger Anstrengungen der letzten Jahre, geflüchtete Menschen mit Sprach- und Integrationskursen zu versorgen, bleibt die Teilnahme von Menschen mit Migrationshintergrund an Weiterbildung insgesamt unterdurchschnittlich. Es bedarf, so die Autorin, nicht nur punktueller Anstrengungen, sondern einer konsequenten interkulturellen Öffnung der Einrichtungen und Institutionen, um dies zu ändern.
