The following article focuses the neglected relation between identity and learning by reconstructing foreign language learning efforts by adults. In spite of educational policy’s proclamation of (continuous) lifelong learning, real learning processes are characterised by various discontinuities. Adults deal with these discontinuities by perceiving, describing and structuring them dependent on their self-images as learners. Interpretations of interviews with adult language learners supply eviden…
Taking the Bavarian Vir tual University (Virtuelle Hochschule Bayern) as an example, the author shows that the innovative potential of vir tual universities lies in the idea of a cooperation of utterly different universities, with teaching staff from different faculties, schools and backgrounds. Bringing these divergent elements together, notably in the question of a mutual acknowledgement of credits issued by each university, is one of the most ambitious aims of the Virtuelle Hochschule Bay…
Students of German as a foreign and second language are often confronted with the problem that dialogues in textbooks rather resemble written than oral German. Oral language phenomena are neglected and generally not systematically presented. This also applies for recent online textbooks. It is a wasted opportunity since multimedia content may be easily used for contrasting formal and informal speech.

This article presents the findings of a research project on structure and change in continuing education in Bremen, set out as a longitudinal analysis of selected years between 1979 and 2006. At the level of the continuing education system as a whole, the author identifies a certain structural stability evident from the fact that despite a growth in the number of market-oriented providers from 1996 to 2006, their competition – providers under public law – retained its structural influence on th…
Welche Sprache(n) spricht Europa?
The author certifies the integration courses for immigrants, which were launched at the beginning of this year, a false start. The responsible Federal Agency allegedly operates with delusive numbers of started courses; the approval procedures are supposed to be too lengthy and the implementation for the sponsor of language courses is allegedly unprofitable. This is supposed to apply intensified to the 30 hour long orientation course, where hardly any direct payers can be expected. Especially t…
