The book deals, for the first time, with the further education and training participation of adults in a systematic and regionally disaggregated fashion. The article provides an insight of the opportunities and challenges of analysing spatial aspects in continuing education including the various concepts of spatial references. Regional continuing education characteristics are presented based on initial findings of the German Continuing Education Atlas.

The author points out the effects on both publishers and the entire academic and learning culture.
Based on the assumption that the findings gained during the PIAAC study provide an impetus for the development of demand-driven support opportunities, the author points out the needs for improvement in the field of basic education. At the same time, regarding the content, the author warns of constricting adult education in favour of competence and outcome oriented programmes.

Based on the potential of online communities, online networks, blogs, wikis etc. for informal learning, the utilization for learning is critically discussed and examined differentially. Possible consequences for adult education, which result from new informal learning opportunities on the internet, are also taken into account.
