For various reasons adult participation in lifelong learning does not measure up to expectations tied to the agenda of lifelong learning. The article suggests that adults relate learning activities to their conceptions of life stages. Therefore, participation in institutionalized continuing education must rather be linked to life-stage-dependant decisions based on sociocultural patterns than to the acceptance of lifelong learning in general. Specifically in the stage of professional life, these…
The focus of this article is on a historical-didactical theory which aims at establishing skills in historical thinking, broken down into skills in historical knowledge, questions, methodology and orientation. The approach, its potential and challenges facing it are explored using the example of the Berlin Wall Monument, a particularly useful example with Germany commemorating the 50th anniversary of the construction of the wall in 2011.
Within the framework of the PISA discussion, adult education must discover the parents as an affected part of the public more than has as yet been the case. Focused on the social environment, continuing education can include the local community and the resulting participation and networking potentials. The article discusses extracts of interviews conducted with representatives of adult education centres in Berlin and Hamburg, revealing the extent of social space orientation work in the context of i…
The changes in further education supported under the provisions of SGB III (Social Code III) engender a reorientation towards demand orientation. The effects must be termed dramatic after a year. Monies decreased by around 25 percent between 2002 and 2003. Participation and entry numbers in courses were drastically reduced. These effects are not temporary phenomena, but rather mark a change of system which further education providers must prepare themselves for.

The topic is explored at various levels: first of all autobiographically taking the example of a new, self-employed orientation. At the second level, the case example can be interpreted as part of a societal trend towards activities crossing the age border. Finally prospects for the topic in the context of adult education …

Based on a contrastive case comparison, it analyses the enhancement of hierarchical and non-hierarchical forms of action coordination triggered by the superior’s leade…
The report covers approaches for research and modeling an orientation to social spaces of educational facilities in synergy with real-world oriented search for education. According to the author, it is based on four central categories: living environments, educational spaces, thematic portals and learning cultures. The author traces the change in paradigm in educational policy from the perspective of the Ministry in charge as a »fundamental empirical change«. It shows structures and framework conditions underlying pertinent major projects (National Educational Panel, technology-based testing, the Programme for Empirical Educational Research) and draws attention to the output and competence orientation as their “leitmotif”. By the same token it views educational policy and educational research as being dep…
