In the educational facilities of the State Sports Associations of the Bundesländer, open adult education is implemented which serves the goals of formation of personality and enlightenment, furthers maturity, and cultivates social competences, and which is - albeit decreasingly - publicly funded. More than 3.000 full-time and part-time pedagogical staff are employed in these facilities. Nearly 15.000 courses for about 300.000 participants are held. But this is not the only field within sports …
Can the benefit derived from a course in further education be measured? Which methodological considerations are to be taken into account? It must be defined first of all which indicators are supposed to indicate the benefit. Evaluators and stakeholders must agree on set points. Data have to be collected using the methods of qualitative as well as quantitative research. Under evaluation aspects, anecdotic evidence has no value. At the end of the article, the author sums up four basic methods of …

While the calls to take more notice of the significance of migration for adult education are loud and clear, notably little attention is paid to them with regard to work on categories. In adult education, fundamental theoretical work on definitions of “migration” is still far from complete. Even though individual studies deal with the term, it seems that attempts to clarify categories remain scarce. If adult education research on migration has a genuine interest in examining the risks of the hi…

Mathematics, natural science and engineering are not among the most favourite learning objectives of either pupils or adults. While they do enjoy a high esteem, they are also perceived as difficult. The authors discuss why this should be so, and give a summary over participation statistics of Volkshochschulen in the past decades, where courses in mathematics, science or technical matters have been on the decline for some time. Against this background, they present aims and methods of their proj…
Virtuality is not the essence of computer-based learning environments: any learning environment contains elements of virtuality in so far as it concerns itself with representations of reality. Even though the difference between computer-based and traditional settings in this respect is one of degree rather than of substance, conditions at the extreme end of the virtuality scale call for a change in learning arrangements. The authors explore the consequences for learners – self-direction, critic…
