Foreign languages à la mode. Trends in adult language acquisition based on the example of the VHS programme Learning foreign languages is a high-status activity in organised adult learning. Based on VHS (adult education centre) statistics, the author shows that foreign languages are an indispensable element of the VHS programme range; hardly any other area is in such constantly high demand, a demand which can also be seen in relation to income status. Now making up 30 percent of all courses,…
In 2004, seven European universities embarked on a project to develop a European Master’s Programme in Adult Education (EMAE). The German Institute for Adult Education followed the project closely as an external evaluator. The consortium developed a curriculum consisting of a common core (70 ECTS) and of university specific courses (50 ECTS). The idea is to offer the whole programme in most of the participating universities. Both the content and the delivery modes of the programme are character…
„Learn habitus“ has its roots in the concept of habitus by the French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu. According to Bourdieu the „habitus“ is represented in the whole of all signs of life, i.e. the daily routine, job, clothes, behaviour, taste, value judgement, in which a person is bedded and which has become the person’s second nature. If our behaviour can be understood as ways of expressing the habits, so can be the way we learn. The learn habitus represents the whole of the learning disposition …
Institutionally organized adult education has traditionally seen the integration of social strata and groups as its most important task. However, in recent years an increasing disinterest of general adult education in integrative work is to be observed which goes along with the emergence of a specialised andragogical approach and institutional compartmentalization: people with disabilities are increasingly catered for by care facilities and financed by social welfare institutions. The emergence…

In the present European context migrants and refugees are represented as a threat to security in the first place. Adult Education, especially when subsidised by the state, finds itself in a double-bind. On the one hand it has to offer a place for “Bildung” for all adults, where they can develop themselves according to their interests, capabilities and needs. Unequal chances are to be reduced and the humanistic ideal of development and expression of one’s personality shall be met. On the other h…
