This contribution focuses on the significance of analyzing learning processes in case-based learning in continuing education. These analyses play a crucial role in finding explanations for the lack of effective instructional interventions. Furthermore, they allow for the immediate review of assumptions on learning mechanisms. After a brief overview of data collection techniques and of the typical data structure underlying such analyses, the procedure for conducting the analysis is described. Af…
People learn in manifold ways in football clubs. This article illustrates this by examining the manager-licensing system of the German Football Association and initiatives aimed at strengthening the role of volunteers in clubs through special qualification strategies. This article supplements a retrospective text which shows that clubs are an important place of learning and the roots of adult education lie in the domain of clubs.
Modern society has widely been characterized as an information society, in that the possession of information (or rather knowledge) is seen as the predominant factor for success. But information is volatile: the need to replace or update obsolete information becomes ever more pressing, as technological and scientific development moves on. This, however, happens in the context of a compartmentalization of society into a sector of successful, flexible individuals on the one hand and a sector of t…
The following article focuses the neglected relation between identity and learning by reconstructing foreign language learning efforts by adults. In spite of educational policy’s proclamation of (continuous) lifelong learning, real learning processes are characterised by various discontinuities. Adults deal with these discontinuities by perceiving, describing and structuring them dependent on their self-images as learners. Interpretations of interviews with adult language learners supply eviden…
In her dissertation, the author collected and evaluated self-assessments of language study travellers travelling with Carl Duisburg Centres. 90 participants were questioned quantitatively. In addition to the expected competence improvement of foreign languages, the flexibility and mobility as well as intercultural competences were increased. The competence acquisition in connection to the participants’ individual ages was investigated in a supplementary qualitative research.
For the author the term of learning place is like a bus: In lifelong learning there is learning always and everywhere. Anyhow the term is important as a perspective for contemplation and as a heuristic key. The author goes into the matter of the different facets of the term and formulates tasks of learning places, especially in the borderless learning area of lifelong learning. He critically points out by all means several excesses of the learning place development, where the didactical figu…
Working in small groups can be regarded as constitutive for learning with cases. Using the example of case-based “train the trainer courses”, this contribution focuses on cooperative learning processes in small groups regarding the contents of the conversation and discussion structure as well as the effects on the competence development of individual adult learners. The presented results provide an insight of the processes of situated, problem-based learning in small groups which are common in …
