Der Band verbindet einige eher theoretisch orientierte und einige eher anwendungsorientierte Beiträge zum Konzept des selbstgesteuerten Lernens älterer Erwachsener in der wissenschaftlichen Weiterbildung. Die anwendungsorientierten Beiträge beziehen sich auf Programme bzw. Modellprojekte der Universitäten Bielefeld und Frankfurt/Main sowie der Katholischen Bundesarbeitsgemeinschaft für Erwachsenenbildung.
Ansätze und Lösungsstrategien von Finanzierungsproblemen der Weiterbildung bekommen im Zusammenhang des lebenslangen Lernens prinzipielle Bedeutung für die Zukunft. Auf dem zweiten DIE-Forum im Dezember 1999 wurden die Probleme der Bewertung von Weiterbildung, der unterschiedlichen Gerechtigkeitsprinzipien und Finanzierungsmodelle von unterschiedlichen Perspektiven her analysiert: Ein spannender Überblick über eine folgenreiche Fragestellung.
