One of the challenges in the pedagogical use of new technologies is gaining understanding of the babylonic confusion of new concepts and terms. The author enumerates some of the most essential terms. His key questions are: Does e-learning really change education and learning fundamentally? Is the acquisition of knowledge by electronic means really totally different from most traditional ways? – „Computers don’t teach. Only educators do“.

This article discusses the question how knowledge may be used for new or alternative learning decisions and in how far the post-modern understanding of “knowledge” is involved in this process. Since Francis Bacon, the concept of knowledge has been related to the question of power. In the beginning, this interrelation was applied to scientific knowledge, nature and its controllability. Since the era of enlightenment this problem has been applied to questions of social power. Finally, it was Foucault who opens up for a new and experimental perspective.

The approaches to a systematized history of the study of adult education in the West German post-war years which arise from this will be outlined in an account wit…
International stimuli. More than 25 years of literacy and basic education A look back at the history of literacy discussions as a debate starting in the 1970s and heavily influenced by international organisations. The urgency of the subject is demonstrated at the start by international figures on the extent of illiteracy. The author sees today’s questions and issues as rooted in the 1980s and 1990s; in his overview of the German government's current funding focus he points out that there is…
