Complaints about the governmental withdrawal from public responsibility for adult education are most common nowadays. The "retrospects" shows how the perception of public responsibility during the last three decades of the 20th century has changed in the mirror of different political guidelines and an altering public interest in adult education.

Karl Benjamin Preusker (1786-1871) war ein bedeutender Vordenker und Wegbereiter des öffentlichen Bibliothekswesens in der ersten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts. 1828 gründete er die erste deutsche Stadtbibliothek in Großenhain. In this article the author characterizes moral conflicts, calls for argumentative solutions, and points out learning chances provided by conflict management. He refers to Toulmin‘s argumentation theory and Habermas‘ discourse ethics. Thus, educators can contribute to the success of ethical learning if their institution guarantees corresponding frame conditions.
The author points out the cultural technique of reading and writing, which enables humans to organise the thoughts, to concentrate and activate the imagination: Thus, reading and writing are much more than the mere dissemination of information and cannot be replaced by any technology.
The report unfolds »biography« and »body« as categories for explaining holistic health education theoretically. At the same time, these terms open up adult educational opportunities, which can be defined by health educational didactics. Dimensions of knowledge and experience meet on an educational level in »biography« and »body«.

The article presents a number of photographs of the Franz Pöggeler estate, which is preserved in the archive of the German Institute of Adult Education. The historic pictures vary between ecclesiastic-monumental architectural photography and simple snap shots and illustrate the differences of learning and teaching arrangements in the history of adult education centres.
