In a small “philosophy story of joy“, the author bends a bow from Aristotle across Kant to utilitarianism. Aristotle had defined joy as that, where a person finds himself. Kant on the other hand accents, that a person can only be satisfied with himself who lives in unison with his moral beliefs. Using the example of the town of Marl, located on the edge of the Ruhr area, the author points out the significance of the interaction between education and culture for urban development. He also shows which paths a town may take to deal with the structural change.

The UN decade is a challenge for a variety of learning places, protagonists and target groups. She confronts the chances for the decade with several social, above all individual barriers, which complicate the learning of sustainability. Besides the value attitudes and emotions above all here the factor…
The authors explain their model of transferring self-directed learning elements from the context of projects to their daily work as adult education teachers in the Volkshochschule des Landkreises Gießen (adult education school). They focus on usability and investigate the learners' view on self-directed learning. Their results: If resources are used wisely, the implementation of self-directed learning is possible and learners appreciate it.
